No, AI agents will not run your business for you

Scroll through automation marketing right now and you will see the same promise on repeat: an autonomous AI agent that runs your customer support, your sales pipeline, your entire operations stack, hands off. It makes for a great demo video. It is not, in my experience actually setting these systems up for real businesses, how the value shows up.

The businesses getting real, measurable time and money back from automation right now are almost never running one big autonomous agent. They are running a handful of narrow, reliable workflows wired together, each one doing one specific job extremely well.

What is actually worth automating today

The highest-leverage automations I build are unglamorous: a new lead comes in, gets enriched with the right context, and lands in the right person's inbox with a draft reply already written. An invoice goes unpaid for ten days and a reminder sequence fires automatically. A support ticket gets tagged and routed based on its content instead of sitting in a shared inbox. None of this makes for an exciting demo. All of it removes hours of manual, repetitive work every single week, and none of it requires the system to make a judgment call it cannot be held accountable for.

Where the hype gets ahead of the reality

Full autonomy sounds appealing until an agent makes a wrong call with a real customer, a real invoice, or real inventory, and nobody was watching closely enough to catch it before it became a problem. The businesses that get burned are usually the ones that skipped the boring, reliable middle step and went straight for the autonomous version because it was the more exciting pitch.

The right amount of autonomy is usually less than the demo promises and more than a founder doing it all by hand. Somewhere in between is a system that runs itself for the 90% of cases that are routine, and hands the remaining 10% to a human who can actually make the call.

Want automation that actually holds up in production?

I build the boring, reliable workflows that save real hours, not the demo that breaks on the first edge case.
